I-smel

I made sure not to tell the job centre I make games.

Posted by I-smel Aug. 4, 2009 @ 3:02 PM EDT

Since I came out of college (English college) I've bin kind of casually lookin for a job animating in games. I chose to do that instead of goin to university, so I'd expect to be lookin for a job for a while before anyone took notice. Hey guess what though, I've got an interview tomorrow at Smashmouth Games in Manchester. This is good cos they're a small studio about 2 miles down the road- It's not that great though cos I think they want a coder, and I kind of want to extend outside of working in Flash. But what the fuck it's my first job. Interview.

Another job I applied for was Character Animator at Bizarre Games in Liverpool, creators of Project Gotham Racing and Geometry Wars. They've got this task on their job vacancies page. Basically they give you a guy and two boxes, and see what you do. It's the classic SHIFT THIS BOX ITS REALLY FUCKING HEAVY test. I did this:

.

.

I made some great progress with Legend of JOHNNY: one full level, two new enemies and a boss in 2 weeks.
Power of 3? Never heard of it.

in the second video in the end the guy is like: fuck this *walk away*

I don't think you're cut out for 3d animation just yet, your animations were stiff and unrealistic at best. Other then that, i think you're a very talented person. Good luck finding a job at such a young age!

Aug. 4, 2009 | 5:59 PM I-smel responds:

I'll keep at it, thanks. My recent 2D stuff looks better, but animating in 3D is a big adjustment.

Aug. 4, 2009 | 5:54 PM JonBro says:

I like how you gave the guy body language past just lifting the boxes. =)

Aug. 4, 2009 | 6:06 PM I-smel responds:

Thanks; I was in a lecture a while ago that talked a lot about how to make a good showreel. One of the things he called out was how all the ametuers do the exact same animation of a guy lifting a heavy box, and I felt stupid cos that was something I'd just done.
So with this I wanted to involve some kind of purpose or emotion or y'know, acting.
Cos if they get a hundred animations of a guy lifting a box then mine'll look well better.

The 3D is okay, but you gotta remember to keep the character moving even if it's just a little shift of weight, or a sag of the arm, etc. In 2D full stops work great, but in 3D they stand out like a sore thumb.

That said, what you had was actually pretty good, you just gotta keep him moving fluidly in the off moments.

Aug. 4, 2009 | 6:20 PM I-smel responds:

Thanks. I'm sure I've learned that before, but must've forgot about it.

Very interesting 3d concept animation
basic and great for a few test runs

the emotions and physical gestures gave me a sense of "the sims" feeling

That was a pretty ok animation. The heavy one should've focused a lot more on weight.

Aug. 4, 2009 | 10:54 PM chickendance333 says:

Although the 3-d is done well overall, it just seems stiff. I have no experience with 3-d animation, but if I was animating 3-d, I would probably just study other fullbody animations such as this one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PDW2t e9StQ to get a feel for how the body is supposed to move every frame.

Could you please post a link to your newest build of Legend of Johnny? I really want to try out all the stuff in the shop but can't in the current one because all the levels but the first one are broken/have no end.

Aug. 5, 2009 | 12:11 PM I-smel responds:

No, since I sold the license to MaxGames I'm not releasing any more unfinished builds.

I just had a job interview at Argos and have another one at Moss Bros. tomorrow. Look at me getting far in life.

Good luck with all your job interviews and such.

I hope you didn't break the "ONLY the geometric objects in scene" rule with that first one.

Aug. 11, 2009 | 11:22 PM I-smel responds:

I didnt get that job, but they e-mailed me back a big list of feedback so that was nice. I haven't read it yet.

I did get a different job though so yipigay.

Legend of JOHNNY? sounds like a game about me. ..lol, that would be lame.

My power of three game isn't going as famously, still working on the first level.

Aug. 11, 2009 | 11:21 PM I-smel responds:

I dont even know what the main guy looks like in mine.

i haven't seen any graphic stuff from lenko either though so w/e lol

Aug. 12, 2009 | 12:29 PM I-smel responds:

I kind of want to ask him about it but Im kind of PRETTY BUSY :(

Aug. 12, 2009 | 1:40 PM ArthurGhostly says:

Aha, some nice subtleties in the animations you showed.

The first is much better than the second. In the second the box didn't seem too heavy at all - there wasn't enough strain from the character - particularly in the legs.

He also seemed to skip across to the smaller box to set it down - and then swing it round to check where he was placing it.

Some real nice animation though. The Giving up at the end of the second - and holding the sphere with arms stretched were some nice touches.

Best of luck with your job hunting I guess.

Aug. 12, 2009 | 5:25 PM midimachine says:

i'll ask him about that stuff next time i see him online. i'll send the choons his way too.

no rush though because it seems like the entire power of three operation is running behind schedule, hah.

Aug. 13, 2009 | 1:22 PM I-smel responds:

Cool. Some guys have really DONE some stuff though.

Bah its not like Im worried about it or anythin

Aug. 14, 2009 | 5:26 PM I-smel responds:
