Oh look I can make a news post every week now.

Yo dawgs. I've had this dev blog goin for a week or so over on FlashGameLicense.com. I kept it there cos I thought developerguys are the only guys who'd really read it, and they usually give some great feedback on games. I would've posted it here, but let's be honest it's full of retards. I mean- the contributorguys are all pretty cool, anyone who wants to make cartoons and games n shit I'm down with that, but; there's a cartoon on the front page right now that's a tribute to Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog and Dragonball Z- All in one.

So anyway, I ran out of room in the text box on FGL and now this devblog's gonna carry on here. Someone keep track of it, a game'll get made, it'll be a laugh. DEVBLOG START NOW!!

This is a work-in-progress of a game I just started making. It's gonna take me about 3 or 4 months to complete. Check back here every so often if you wanna watch it develop. Actually you can click Add To Watch List to get updates.

27th September 2008

Use WASD to move around. Clicking the mouse close to your character will do a melee attack, clicking far away will shoot. Play around with it.

29th September 2008

I won't usually update this often, this is just a one-off.
Checking if vertical platforming is an option. It works pretty well. Arrow keys now usable. Also you can double-tap in a direction for a new melee attack. Climbing animation added for when you get to a ledge you can't quite reach.

4th October

I think I've finished all the animations for this guy. Drew him a sword, added more friction to the floor, made the camera shaky-as-hell to emphasize impact and baditude. New moves added:
Double-tap Left or Right to smash forward
Double-tap Left or Right in mid-air to smash diagonally.
Do a melee attack and hold the mouse down, then release when the sword flashes for a radial special.

The only thing I think I'm lacking is an attack that launches an enemy into the air, and another that smashes them down. My first thought was to use the mousewheel, but they're not as common as you'd think.

I thought about Double-tapping Up or Down, but you can Double-tap Up. As soon as you press Up, you're in the air. So Double-tapping Up for a ground-based attack isn't gonna work. I don't know what I'll do for that.
Anyway, I should probably start making enemies next.

9th October

Okay, alot of development:
Firstly, there's some actual background art now. I've decided that I'm making alot of the art outside of Flash for this one. The Newgrounds team does alot of their artwork in Photoshop and it makes the games really stand out. Makes it look alot more professional, I thought I should try it. Considering I'm pretty useless in Photoshop, I turned to the next best thing on my PC after Flash; 3DS Max. I should be practising 3D anyway.

ENEMY- There is now an enemy. He's pretty standard. His limbs have blades connected to em, and he can align all the blades into a wheel and roll at you. Now I was aiming to not rip off Devil May Cry with enemies, because it's pretty obvious that's the main influence behind the game, and I wanted to come up with all the content myself. Sadly though, I was playing through it this week, and I got up to mission 14 yesterday where you meet an enemy that turns into a wheel and fucking rolls at you. So I felt pretty bad about that.
Anyway, he's about 70% done. I've not full decided on some of his art and the death animation is just a lazy placeholder. I've bin workin on the AI, and I think it's allright so far. If anyone finds themselves beating him by just doing the same move over and over, please tell me about it.

NEW MOVES- I thought for a long time on the Blastoff - Breakdown moves. The obvious choice would be to drag the mouse up really fast, but then the mouse ends up too far away from the guy. I thought about rolling the mouse wheel up, but alot of people don't have mouse wheels and it interferes with the web page. Someone on the forums suggested a good idea; Press DOWN and then UP to smash a guy up. I tried it out, but having to press two buttons for one move was just really bad. You have to be really quick. It wasn't comfortable and I couldn't see everyone getting the hang of it. I think I found a way that works though: Do a melee move, then press UP right after it to launch a guy in the air. When in the air, press DOWN to smash a guy to the ground.

That's it for October 9th. Strangely though, I have one bid for $250. Not for the source script or anything- For the game as it is now. Crazy.

Hehe, that's really cool. It is really forceful and all that and I like the main character. But theres a weird frame of the jump animation right at the start that flashes at the beginning. Also, although the background looks nice, it doesn't look more proffessional than your previous works.

Yeah there's a frame where he bends down before the jump.

I allways hate my background art, it's so boring. I'll make the rest of the level like this an see how it looks, then I'll decide on how I should do it. I might eventually get someone else to do it, WHO KNOWS.

uhhhh woah!? Thats amazing. I love the animations, and everything about it is solid. Youre really good at gamedev! This is weird because a while ago i was tryna do the same sort thing (also taking from DMC).. minus the guns.. an it had a lot of the same kind of moves :p (i ditched it, lost enthusiasm..so did my coder)

3Dmax for the backgrounds seems like a dumb choice...torrent photoshop, or use flash.. photoshop will probably lag the game a lot tbh..

also, the FX on the attacks are weak as hell. I dont think all those tiny fbf particles look any good.. just use 1 or 2 frames, of awesome blurr/speedness..

this looks amazing though. I think its going to be a really hard thing to balence/get perfect :s

There's no problem with GETTING Photoshop, I just can't use it. I can do some basic photo manipulation business, but I can't really draw in it. I'm gonna try it in Flash next update and see what that's like.

I like the effects. Like the white lines all over the place? They're all WOOSHy n shit.
I can see why you wouldn't like the bullets though, I'm gonna redo that sooner or later. What's there right now is pretty much placeholder.

Yeah, I made this kinetic as balls cos it's totally different than my other games. That makes it way hard to do though. WELL, THAT'S HOW WE LEARN.

i'm really liking the background art, it looks super nice-- my only concern is making the characters/enemies fit with the background look. Right now they clash a lot, imo

yeah

instead of up during combat, I would prefer to tap down-down: on the floor, airlaunch, on the air, headsplitter. also, make a landing recoil when he lands with the headsplitter. I like the dust FX of the sword, expect on those to anims i just mentioned. they need a brush-up.

I've been following your game since you put it up now...

The engine is great and I look forward to playing it!

I agree with the previous guy who said you should take away the down frame, I know in real life you would crouch down before a jump but since you want the response in a game to be pretty much instantaneous adding some real anticipation just wouldn't be feasable, and just having a frame of it looks really odd once you notice, So just in that sense you might want to take it out.

Also if you do a melee move then move your mouse out real quick you shoot again, probably just something you haven't worked out yet but it lets you get a double hit on something.

Yeah, you can switch between close and ranged attacks whenever you want. even mid-combo. That's deliberate. I know sometimes it doesn't show the animation for it, but that's worth it. Having to wait for your melee animation to finish before you can start shooting is really annoying when it gets you killed.

I'll take out the jump frame, but I like it. So maybe I'll put it back in. It's there for a 30th of a second, so I don't think I'm sacrificing any responsiveness.

Shows alot of promise, I had some fun just playing those short tests. Can't wait to see the final product

Great job, the enemy is very fun to fight and the platforming is really nice. Just a question, but are you going to fix how the main character's shooting animation looks while he's moving?

Oh and one more question, will the radial special have some sort of "Magic" bar? It seems pretty cheap if you could use it all the time.

I think having to hold down the mouse button for so long, and being forced to not attack is a pretty effective limitation.

Thats really impressive work man, and I love your timing, the moves all have real weight and a sense of punch to them, keep up the amazing work.

Well, I think the charge should be longer for the radial just to balance it's strength out. You should also make the cloak wave in the wind like you have it when he has the sword out. It looks a little static compared to his melee stance.
